Single-Dose Effects of Citalopram on Neural Responses to Affective Stimuli in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial

چکیده

Abstract Background Psychiatric medication that has a soothing effect on limbic responses to affective stimuli could improve instability symptoms as observed in borderline personality disorder (BPD). The objective of this study was investigate whether citalopram versus placebo reduces the response neural circuitry during an emotional challenge. Methods A total 30 female individuals with BPD diagnosis participated placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover trial design. Three hours after oral drug intake, viewed pictures while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. Blood oxygen level–dependent images negative scenes and faces showing expressions were assessed regions interest (amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex, insula, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). perfusion at rest arterial spin labeling. Results not significantly affected by (n = 23). Citalopram reduced amygdala 25, treatment difference left hemisphere: −0.06 ± 0.16, p Conclusions can alter BPD, which is characterized overly responsive circuitry.

Neural responses to emotional stimuli in comorbid borderline personality disorder and bipolar depression.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe clinical condition characterised by different maladaptive traits such as impulsivity and affective lability. Mood and emotion dysregulation are core features of affective disorders. Indeed patients affected by mood disorder (MD) have a significantly higher prevalence of comorbid BPD, resulting in more unstable mood and poorer response to medicat...

Effects of dialectic-behavioral-therapy on the neural correlates of affective hyperarousal in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND Affective hyperarousal is the hallmark of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and the main target for dialectic-behavioral-therapy (DBT). This pilot study examined whether improved regulation of affective arousal following DBT translates into changes in relevant neural systems. METHODS We applied five sequential fMRI scans over a 12-week in-patient treatment program. Six female B...

Efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation on psychosocial functioning in Borderline Personality Disorder: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Follow-up studies revealed that subjects with borderline personality disorder (BPD) present high rates of clinical remission, although psychosocial functioning often remains impaired. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a cognitive rehabilitation intervention versus a psychoeducational program on psychosocial functioning in subjects with BPD. METHODS A multicenter,...

Psychophysiological ambulatory assessment of affective dysregulation in borderline personality disorder.

Many experts now believe that pervasive problems in affect regulation constitute the central area of dysfunction in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, data is sparse and inconclusive. We hypothesized that patients with BPD, in contrast to healthy gender and nationality-matched controls, show a higher frequency and intensity of self-reported emotions, altered physiological indices o...
